Combatting nutrient pollution
in the Mediterranean basin
Innovative solutions
to prevent, reduce and remediate nutrient pollution along the land-river-sea system in the Mediterranean basin
SEACURE aims at demonstrating, scaling up and replicating effective innovations for the systemic prevention and reduction of nutrient pollution in the Mediterranean Sea basin, in line with the innovation ecosystem framework provided by the ongoing Mediterranean Lighthouse projects and in close cooperation with related activities implemented by regional soil health living labs in the area.
The project is dedicating resources for the regional upscale and replication of successful nutrient management strategies devoted to: i) reduce soil pollution and enhance its restoration; ii) reduce fertilizers use and nutrient losses; and iii) prevent, minimize and remediate nutrients pollution in freshwater and marine ecosystems, in six territorial units (Mar Menor and Central Catalunya in Spain, Po delta and Esino river in Italy, and Axios river delta and Thessaly Plain in Greece).
SEACURE is investing resources to expand and replicate effective nutrient management strategies at the regional level.
What will be improved?
The project will allow to integrate proven solutions into wider holistic strategies to evidence the potential to ensure a healthier Mediterranean landscape-river-sea. Bringing onboard the actors of regional ecosystem from the outset of the project, aligning with local contexts, fostering knowledge exchange and advocating for impact pave the path towards scale up in the affected basin/regions and replication in new territories.
Who will benefit?
Expected impacts
Real-Life Validation
SEACURE will validate in real-life scenarios up to Technology Readiness Level (TRL)7 multiple nutrient management strategies in 6 representative Mediterranean territorial units, framed within basins.
Decision-Making Support
An integrated Decision Support Tool (DST) assisting implementors and decision-makers in the demo and associated regions in assessing intervention actions based on 3 criteria: expected environmental impact (nutrients pollution reduction target), available financial means, and severity of the pollution constraint. This tool will increase the deployment of the SEACURE systemic approach to new basin areas affected by pollution.
Knowledge & Policy Impact
The successful completion of Vision Papers, Policy Briefs, multiple peer-reviewed papers, and a Policy Handbook, among other publications, which will be made available on this website.
Scaling & Replication
SEACURE will have established collaborations with Associated Regions within and outside the Mediterranea Basin, initiating steps to promote replication of its solutions but also encouraging and mobilising other regions to tackle nutrient pollution.
