The SEACURE project, funded by the Horizon Europe program and launched under the EU Missions ‘A Soil Deal for Europe’ and ‘Restore our Ocean and Waters’ officially started in October 2024 with the Kick-off Meeting held in Vic, involving 25 partners from 5 European countries, thrilled to roll out two days of face-to-face exchanges on nutrient management and innovative solutions to tackle nutrient pollution.
This 48-month project, led by the BETA Technological Centre (UVic-UCC), aims to address nutrient pollution in the soil-river-sea system in the Mediterranean. Our core belief is that finding solutions requires observing existing relationships and avoiding the perpetuation of harmful patterns, which demands both adaptation and innovation. This is where our project, supported by a strong consortium of transdisciplinary partners, takes a decisive step forward—driving behavioral change and advancing ecosystem restoration through prevention, nutrient pollution reduction, and remediation strategies.
The innovative solutions will be tested in six pilot areas across three Mediterranean countries—Italy, Spain, and Greece—where nutrient pollution is most severe. The pilot sites include the Mar Menor (Murcia) and Central Catalonia in Spain, the Po Delta and the Esino River in Italy, and the Axios Delta in Greece. The goal is also to determine whether the solutions and results from Mediterranean regions can be scaled to other areas and countries. This would provide valuable evidence to support decision-making on holistic nutrient management policies at regional levels.
The kickoff meeting brought together over 50 participants, serving as a key opportunity to establish working relationships and collaboration among all partners. It marked the start of planning upcoming activities and consolidating efforts to prevent, reduce, and remediate nutrient pollution through sustainable land practices, enhanced wastewater treatment, and nature restoration initiatives.

The project places great importance on the sharing of knowledge, the dissemination of results, and awareness of the thematic areas covered. To do so, SEACURE will provide a sustained online presence, particularly through social networks and this website.
